Sustainable Urban Development

Indonesia is expected to be able to reduce the effects of global warming; supposed to apply regulations on the concept of green building. To apply the concept of green building, there are 6 aspects that must be implemented to build infrastructure.

Appropriate Site Development

The development of urban areas is growing rapidly due to in general the selection of development sites in Indonesia prefers land price factors rather than environmental factors. Along with the growth of urban area, the availability of Green Area is even more limited.

Unplanned urban development caused the building to run uncontrollably that causes bad air quality and high concentrations of pollutants and floods. To reduce these problems is to provide Green Area. Green Area is one of the requirements of Appropriate Site Development, which is to free the land with a minimum area of 10% of the total land area.

Tiny House Movement

The tiny house movement (also known as the "small house movement") is a description for the architectural and social movement that advocates living simply in small homes. There is currently no set definition as to what constitutes as a tiny house; however, a residential structure under 500 square feet (46 m2) is generally accepted to be a tiny home.

The tiny house movement re-popularized and gained attention in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and the financial crisis of 2007 - 2010 that struck the United States. This is because the idea of a small house offers more affordable, easy-to-maintain and eco-friendly dwellings.

Change Planning Paradigm

• Build more compact & vertical buildings, stop building new landed house/buildings on green fields
• Renovate /redevelop existing buildings
• Change planning & design paradigm from private car oriented to pedestrian focus
• Transform existing horizontal area into more compact & vertical buildings. Reduce building footprint and provide more open spaces
• Redevelop & transform brown-field area, degraded waterfront & slums area
• Reorient the development back to the city
• Revitalized/rejuvenate existing urban fabrics with focus on public transportation network - mass transport station as the driver for growth
• Provide and facilitate optimum & convenient pedestrian path, bicycle & other non motorize vehicle

If Green Area is applied, the puddles coming from rain water will be on the surface or the plains of about 10%, while 40% of evaporation occurs and 25% absorbed by green plants or trees and 25% stored in the soil. Thus, the problem of floods will be resolved.

The development of urban areas must be able to support sustainability without reducing the quality of the environment and the quality of human life. In this aspect, the areas of land and the location of the building are concerned with the environment.
